Holy Communion Party Games that Work for the Kids

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Gail Leino The Holy Communion occurs at intervals, but the most important Holy Communion is the first one that a child undergoes in their church and to make it fun for the child too have a few holy communion party games afterwards. This is a very special occasion, so much so that many parents choose to throw a small gathering or party to mark the occasion. These two games are appropriate Holy Communion Party Games geared towards using up all that excess energy kids usually have. Tipping the Orange This is a fun racing game to get everyone involved at the party. Get lots of oranges and large sized spoons for this Holy Communion party game. For each round have two guests pair up to face off against each other. Youll need some room outside for the two opponents to move around in. Each contestant gets one orange and one spoon. Be sure to set down the ground rules before you get started. Such as no tripping, pushing or shoving. Each opponent must try to knock the orange off the spoon the other opponent has it balanced on. This can be by tapping the underside of their opponents spoon or trying to push the orange off their opponents spoon, but no shoving. Keep that in mind and everyone will have a fun and energetic time at your Holy Communion party games. Name Echo: At your Holy Communion party games, you can use Name Echo to help the guests, both adults and kids, get to know each other. To start the activities have everyone get into a circle. Then begin this Holy Communion game by having the communion boy or girl call out their name and then starting a wave motion by raising their arms in the air. Everyone repeats this joyful motion starting with the person to the left of the communion boy or girl and going all the way around the circle, just like an ocean wave. While these games are just simple activities that get everyone moving around, youll be surprised at how much fun the guests have while playing your selected Holy Communion party games. Theyll especially love getting out and about if you have a nice warm day for the festivities. Keeping Those New Year’s Resolutions

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Jennifer Murray Here we are again at the beginning of another new year and once again, we’re all making resolutions to eat healthier or exercise more or lose weight. Only about 20% of us usually keep our New Year’s resolutions because the resolutions we make just don’t stick for whatever reason. Some of the most common health-resolution mistakes are easily fixed. Below are some tips on how to fix those mistakes and stick with your new resolutions. Do not skip meals. One of the easiest traps to get caught up in is overeating and then skipping meals to try and “make up” for overindulging. This can mean disaster when trying to control and/or lose weight. Instead of focusing on how much and how often you eat, focus on what you eat. Eat plenty of fruits, veggies, beans, and whole grains, and keep your fat intake low. These healthy foods will unnoticeably trim your caloric intake. You won’t even notice the reduction of your caloric intake since these foods are full of fiber, which is naturally filling. For every 14 grams of fiber added to your diet, you will reduce your overall calorie intake by approximately 10%. Use exercise in addition to a change in diet. Some people start exercising and/or start exercising more, thinking they will just “burn off” the unhealthy foods they’re eating. Not true. Make it a combination of dietary changes, aerobic exercises, and muscle-building moves and you are sure to see results, which will motivate you to keep going. Don’t go it alone. If your resolutions include making healthy changes, a good way to boost your resolve is to make those changes along with a family member, loved one, co-worker, or friend (both online and offline friends). This way, you will have someone to trade recipes, books, and tips with, and also have someone to be accountable to. Don’t set unrealistic goals. Be realistic when setting your goals. For example, don’t get your hopes up to lose 50 lbs. before swimsuit season. Also, don’t try to make all your healthy changes all at once. Set an attainable goal, reach it, and then give yourself a great big pat on the back. Have a plan. It’s great to have goals you want to meet, but how are you going to meet them? What steps are you going to take to create new habits? In order to make changes, we have to have a way to make that change. For example, if one of your goals is to lose weight by cutting out junk food, what are you going to do instead of reaching for chips or soda? Have a plan ready so that when the time comes, you take an action that will help you get to your goal. A Kite Mobile Made From Coat Hangers

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Ron Maier This is an excellent way to let your child participate in the decoration of his or her room while at the same time having fun working on a creative crafts project! All you will need for this project is probably already laying around your house. Find a wire coat hanger, some yarn, some colorful construction paper, glue, and decorating materials, such as paint, markers, crayons, stickers, glitter, etcetera. Cut 6 diamond shapes out of the construction paper, it is fun to make them different colors, because each diamond represents a kite…and we want several different kites. You can make them different sizes as well to add variety, a good rule of thumb for the average size is five or six inches tall and three or four inches wide. Make them big enough to give your child room to create a masterpiece on each one! Have your child spend time decorating each of the kites. To add variety, it is fun to have varying media used for the decoration, for example some might use crayons, a couple with paint, and one or two with glitter or stickers. Once all the masterpieces are done, affix yarn to the bottom of each kite to represent its tail. Six inches or so will do, again it is fun to add some variety in lengths and colors. Stapling works just fine, although glue or tape will do as well. Now, cut six bow shapes out of the construction paper to attach to the end of the tails. This can be made easier by cutting the shapes into a tuxedo bow-tie shape of two opposing triangles. Of course you can always spend the time to make them curvy and add as much detail as you want. Attach them to the end of the tails using staples, glue, or tape. Now you can have your child attach the kites to the hanger. Again, varying lengths of yarn can be used for this purpose, however try to encourage your little one to space them along the hanger in a relatively even manner to ensure balance. This is not rocket science, it doesn’t have to be exact, just roughly balanced. Now you are almost ready to hang the work of art. Have your child participate in the selection process of where to hang the mobile in his or her room. Once a suitable location has been agreed to (away from ceiling fans and the like), tie a piece of yarn to the hook of the hanger. This will allow the hanger to rotate freely and be a true mobile. Then, attach the top of the yarn to the ceiling, either by tying it to a hook, or using a stapler, thumb tack or push pin. You now have a kite mobile! Add to the fun by spending time with your child making up stories about flying kites, or which make believe character each kite belongs to, or anything else that will stimulate the imagination. The possibilities are endless! About the Author: Ron Maier is the owner of OnlyHangers, an online specialty store offering a variety of styles and types of coat hangers. What is a ‘Mail Order Bride?’

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Irina Chernoff What does this term mean? Where does it come from? Why do dating services use this term? Lets dot our is and cross our ts once and for all! International marriages are very popular now. Though many people cant understand them. Sometimes they just need to mature for it. Nevertheless, developed communications and Internet have done their part. It has become convenient, accessible and quick to meet people from other countries. But it hasnt always been so! However, international marriages did exist. How did people meet? Here is the version of Yale Professor of History, Howard R. Lamar: At the early period of history of the USA, in California, the Chinese who found themselves there absolutely without women, started to organize marriages through go-betweens. The Frenchmen who found themselves in Louisiana among the English-speaking population organized marriage-mediation in a big way. The brides were brought for them from France. The women usually came with small boxes and due to these boxes they were named “casket-girls”. They became well-known. Later so-called mercys girls appeared. Mercy imported girls to Wyoming, Oregon and Alaska in vans. But these potential brides turned out to be surprising. They started their businesses at the West stores, sewing workshops, kitchens, and the marriage-intermediary didnt work out. And the opposite example. To the far west women were brought to brothels from Germany and France. Many of them were prostitutes in Europe, but in a new, big and rich country they realized that they could start a new life and they scattered, dispersed in the environment and married farmers. It was about this time that the term “mail-order brides” appeared. Here is how the history of its origin is explained in Answers.com: The term probably originated during the colonial period when men traveled through various empires for financial gain. After establishing their income in a new colony they faced three choices: - stay single, - marry a local indigenous woman or, - seek to have an available woman come from the metropolitan centre; or in the case of economic immigrants that came from an economically depressed region to seek employment, from their mother country. Often these marriages were arranged by members of the immigrants family ‘back home’ and the relatives picked amongst available women to find one that would suit their family member thus they would negotiate with the woman before she left with her belongings (and perhaps with her children if she was a widow). Often these women were willing to travel for marriage because of the limited opportunity in their place of origin. This tradition continues amongst first generation immigrants to western countries, most particularly amongst Pakistani, Bangladeshi and East Indian males and females who wish to marry someone of similar social, economic and educational status; indeed many marriages are arranged in India and the bride and groom may not have much if any opportunity to court before the marriage ceremony is conducted. During the twentieth century this tradition has been used for a (in some ways) similar, yet very different social phenomenon, that of a western male, usually second or third generation immigrant himself, seeking a woman from a more ‘traditional’ or non-western culture. For whatever reason, these men seek out women from various countries, most notably economically depressed parts of the world, such as countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States like Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the other central Asian - stans, or from cultures where femininity is still encouraged and women are expected to take care of their husbands and engage in housekeeping, child rearing and other domestic chores. It was in regard to the history of terms. However, international acquaintances became that popular during 1980-es. Telephone, fax, photos, catalogues. Like some food you choose one out of thousands women, make an order, pay by a credit card and she is coming over through Fed Ex in a big wooden crate ;) I dont know, guys, how effective this way was and how many positive stories can be told to advocate this way of acquaintance today. Still there are agencies that stick to this way. HOW DO THEY WORK? As a rule, at their sites there are thousands of women. 20-30 thousand is a norm. A huge catalogue, choose any. You can buy her contact information and correspond with her on your own, or can use the agencys service for it. The main difference of this kind of agencies from dating services like ours (and their main minus) is that women are only pages of a catalogue for them: faceless, nameless goods. The agencies like ours work with each woman personally! We not only know her by sight, but also checked her passport information, we know if she is well or ill at the moment, if she is in the city or left on business or holiday. We know some details of her life because we often talk to her at the office. We are more than marriage go-between for a woman. We are consultants, friends and psychologists. It is normal! So we can say with confidence: we answer for each woman of our agency! Can an agency that has 20 thousand women say it? Why then you can find our site on request mail order brides in search services like www.google.com? Unfortunately, this term is too loved by journalists and this is why it is so popular. And often, when talking about the bride from abroad, someone uses the term mail order brides, actually having no idea about the details of the process. So we have to use it in order than men who are interested in foreign brides get to our site. Why unfortunately? Because this term humiliates women! They find it very insulting that someone can think them to be goods that can be ordered by catalogue. The man who respects his bride will never allow himself, his relatives and friends to use this word. This term is also very loved by American feminists. They say to American men: first you order wonderful, tender mail order brides and then we have to defend them from you! :)) So Id like to sum up: Mail order brides is the term that can mislead you, because it is a well-promoted brand. We cant send you a bride by mail, but we can acquaint you with real women who want to make a family. Feel the difference :) Irina Chernova I am 28 years old Russian female, working in dating field for almost 7 years and my specialty is dating articles for ChanceForlove Russian Dating Services Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Irina_Chernoff http://EzineArticles.com/?What-is-a-Mail-Order-Bride?&id=111538 buy phentermine site how to order phentermine phentermine no prescription overnight delivery phentermine pills no prescription

Ethics of Beliefs

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Kelly Lopez Criticism of Pascals Wager Pascals wager is an application of decision theory to prove that it is always better to believe in god than not believing in god. He argued that it is always beneficial to believe in God, because the expected value to be gained from believing in will always be greater than the expected value derived from non-belief. Holistically it wasnt an argument for existence of god but a mere emphasis that as per decision theory, taking a decision of believing in god is always more fruitful than otherwise. The wager is primarily based on two assumptions one it is based on that god rewards or punishes as described in Christian theology and secondly god doesnt exist. The wager does not take into account the possibility of god started behaving differently than what it is mentioned in bible, what if he starts rewarding skepticism and punishing dogmatism, or rewarding honest reasoning and punishing feigned faith, or what if he does not punish belief or disbelief at all. Secondly if there is more than one god like in case of Hinduism, then the wager doesnt hold good as one doesnt know which god will reward and which one will punish. Or taking it even on other extreme that only the non Christian gods exist and they punish the Christians for following the belief. The wager also failed to mention any financial cost relating to beliefs. Today when most of the religious practices are somehow associated with donation and money spending activities, financial consideration is quite crucial in deciding for belief. In fact most of the missionary money in late nineteen century and mid twentieth century is spent on making people follow Christianity in vast areas of Africa and Asia. Permissibility of following beliefs In his essay The ethics of belief, W.K.Clifford wants us to believe that forming our beliefs is the correct way is a matter of true ethical importance. Clifford argument were that all beliefs influence action in one way or another and actions which are based on unjustified beliefs either cause harm directly or will promote credulity leading to broader social ills so therefore it is always wrong to hold unjustified beliefs. If we look broadly both of his premises are questionable first objection is not with evidence but with the falsity of beliefs and secondly his entire examples involve beliefs that have consequences for welfare of others. To counter his stand he made no differentiation between action which is intrinsically wrong rather than instrumentally wrong. Instrumental actions are not wrong in themselves but they do cause harm. So if unsupported belief is intrinsically wrong then it is clear that it will always be wrong and if they will always be wrong then it cant be believed without sufficient evidence and thus raises the questions over permissibility of complete faith. Problem of Evil We all believe god is omnipotent and omnipresent, and then the question is why evil happens in our world. If the ontological argument of god is true then we all have justifying reasons for beliefs in gods existence. But here lies a contradiction the problem of evil. 1. If god exists then shed be omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent this is believers beliefs. 2. If god is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent then there is no evil. Taking both in same context, if god exists then there is no evil. But as we all know there is evil so does it prove that god doesnt exist. This is the problem of evil for theism, unless there is a way around it should provide theists to give up their beliefs based on pain of irrationality. Few arguments do come up to find solution of this problem but they fall short on proving the base hypothesis of omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent god. A) Evil is essential as a counterpart to good as there cant be no good without some evil this raises the questions on gods powers so he/ she is not perfect as theist assume it to be. Secondly if we only need a little bit of evil to contrast to good then why are horrors like tsunami in East Asia in 2004? B) Evil is not due to god but to human free will then the question arises why god provided us with free will when so much misery results. Secondly lots of evil arent related to free will at all like earthquakes etc. so why do they occur if god is good and he protects innocents. Thirdly why not god just give all of us excellent characters so that we all can choose the best possible way for betterment of society on a whole. If we take this argument to the extreme than free will in long run will result in gods action depends upon us than vice versa as theist want us to believe. So free will is incompatible with gods omnipotence and omniscient. Gardening - How to Plant Hedges

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Terry Blackburn HEDGES If you want to plant a hedge on the side or backyard, you will need the following equipment: Shovel Tape measure Rope and stakes Scissors Hammer Steps to planting a hedge The first step is to create a straight line which you will follow to ensure that your hedge is straight. There is nothing sloppier on a great looking lawn than a crooked hedge. Once you have measured the length of your hedge, use the rope and stakes to mark your line. Make sure you do not create a hedge that sits right on your property line. Give yourself two to three feet of room between you and your neighbor. Use the hammer to secure the stakes into the ground. The next step is to mark where you want your hedges. You should leave a foot between each hedge in order to give them room to grow. Aerate your soil if necessary and clear away all grass and weeds from the soil. Measure the length of the roots of the hedge. They will be wrapped up in a ball, but you can measure from the top of the ball to the bottom. This will tell you how big to dig the hole. You should dig twice as far as the root length. (if the root is 6 inches, you should dig at least 12 inches). Begin digging. After you are done, you can place the hedge into the ground. Make sure you fill the hole up with enough soil. Make sure the hedge is secure before moving on the next one. You should monitor your hedges during the first few days in order to make sure they are getting enough water, the soil is not eroding at the base, and the hedges are not falling over. If you are looking for a privacy hedge, then you will have to buy hedges that are larger. Plant them the same way or hire a landscaper if they are too heavy to move. Hedges will need to be trimmed and should always appear straight. While you can create a sloping hedge, you will have to be consistent with the slope so that it looks intentional and does not looking like a trimming mistake. All too often, people who have a great lawn do not pay enough attention to their hedges. This can ruin the look you have worked so hard to create. Hedges can take years to grow and like all other plants on your lawn, will need care every once in a while. Terry Blackburn. Reiki Manual

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Eric Hartwell The Reiki Manual would be like any other manual or a guide to the principles and ethics of Reiki. This manual is not a hard and fast compilation but most Reiki manuals given out to students and teachers alike would contain similar thoughts in order to maintain the ideals of this spiritual tradition. Hough you might see the contents differing from branch to branch and from Master to Master the primary principles remain very much the same. Of course a Reiki manual is a constant work in progress. Here we are going to list out some of the commonly included topics in a Reiki manual: Ethics Since the nature of Reiki is for the most part, healing there are certain requirements that need to be observed. The greatest requirement for a healer is to have the permission of the person to be healed. We all know that healing begins from within and as a healer it is not possible to force healing on anybody. So it is a must to obtain the permission of the person to be healed especially in situations where there is a tendency to judge others X is addicted to drugs and requires healing but you as a healer arent a judge of that. Though Reiki is the way of compassion it may need being hard-hearted sometimes. Healing is not always curing, never promise a cure as this is not something that is under your control. Never attempt to give medical advice or ask anyone to refrain from medication.Respecting client confidentiality is imperative to a Reiki practitioner to ensure trust. Never let the power of Reiki turn you into a Godman or Godwoman by others or yourself. The energy is just being channelised by you but it is not you that is bringing about the healing. Be responsible about the energy you are directing, energy should be used with caution and respected. Symbols There are three kinds of symbols that are used in Reiki imparted to the student at level 2, the fourth symbol is disclosed in level 3. These symbols dont have any power of their own but are generally used as a focal point or for meditation or as a trigger to connect with and focus the different frequencies of the Universal Spiritual Energy. Using the symbols is a personal choice and may be used always or till you would like or not at all. Use your intuition to guide you as there is no right or wrong way to do Reiki. Later more symbols have been added to the original four and symbols from other traditions like Om from Hinduism is also widely used. There are multiple ways to use these symbols and attuning to these symbols may differ from school to the other. Reiki Grounding Grounding is needed after performing spiritual exercises in order to break connection with the astral plane in the absence of which you could feel spaced out. Reiki energy is great for grounding. Many people have different ways of grounding their excess energy. You can use Reiki energy to balance your chakras and ground yourself. As a closer knowing or practicing Reiki is not away to enlightenment but it is a life long journey that walks in a spiral to the Divine. Why a Voodoo Lily Is Not a Carnivorous Plant

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Jacob Farin I was visiting one of my doctor-friends at her office, and I noticed a faint peculiar odor. I finally had to ask her, What is that smell? Did you forget to take out your biohazard containers? No, she said. It is the Voodoo Lily that just bloomed outside the window. Sure enough, right below her office window was a plant with a strikingly beautiful flower, but with the scent of a rotting dead mouse on a hot summer day. I told her that she needed to dig that plant out. Even though its flowers were stunning, its odor was putrid! It would give patients the wrong impression about her clinic! The next day, the Voodoo Lily was promptly dug up and thrown away. What is interesting about Voodoo Lily flowers is that they attract flies, not bees, for pollination. That is why they produce an odor similar to rotting meat. Their flowers are also ingenious traps that keep flies buzzing around until they pollinate all parts of the flower. Voodoo Lilies flowers also produce heat, raising the air temperature in the flower by several degrees. Some botanists reported flower temperatures as high as 110F (43C) in cool shade! This increase in temperature makes flies more active. However, Voodoo Lilies attract flies for the sole purpose of pollination and is sometimes mistaken as being carnivorous. To qualify as being carnivorous, a plant needs to: 1) Have a specific mechanism for capturing insects. 2) Secrete enzymes to breakdown the insect. 3) Digest and utilize the nutrients found in the insect. Nearly all plants growing in your garden get their nutrition through their roots. Nitrogen, phosphorous, minerals and other nutrients are absorbed by expansive root systems found beneath the soil surface. Roots are designed to search for rich deposits of nutrients and water. Once found, they gather available nutrients and send them to the upper parts of the plant to produce leaves, branches, flowers, and fruits. Carnivorous plants, on the other hand, grow in acidic and very nutrient-poor soil. So, they need to get their nutrition by other means, mainly through their leaves. Their leaves are designed to capture insects where they are broken down into a form that is easily absorbed. Though there are several methods carnivorous plants use to capture insects, they all use digestive chemicals, called enzymes, to increase absorption. These enzymes are very similar to those found in your own digestive tract. Enzymes break down protein into smaller bits that are capable of passing through plants’ tough cell walls. So, based on these criteria, the Voodoo Lily is not at all carnivorous. No parts of their flower have been found to secrete any chemicals that absorb nutrients, even though flies have been known to die in its flower from total exhaustion. Without digestive chemicals to absorb nutrients through its leaves, Voodoo Lily fails as a carnivorous plant. Voodoo Lilies also attract flies by its gut-wrenching, meat-rotting smellng flower. Carnivorous plants, on the other hand, attract flies with a sweet nectar secreted by their leaves. No carnivorous plants produce a scent that even comes close to the putridity of a Voodoo Lily. So next time you see, or smell, a Voodoo Lily, you can tell your friends why it is not a carnivorous plant. Choosing Your Groomsmen: No Matter What They Say, Nobody “Must” Be In the Wedding Party

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Jennifer Baumann Your lovely fiance has chosen her ‘maids, and now you’re stuck with the task of finding just the right number of family and friends to pair them with. How do you decide who makes the cut? The Usual Suspects Remember: No matter what your family or friends say, there aren’t people who “must” be in the wedding party. Select buddies you’re close with-not guys you feel obligated to ask. If you’re unfamiliar with wedding etiquette, however, here are the “usual” rules for including groomsmen in your wedding party. Brothers-yours and your bride’s-come first. Unless there are strange circumstances (if you don’t speak to your brother, for instance), your brothers and her brothers are automatically in the wedding party. Next come your closest friends (some may be relatives) who are responsible-and let’s get real here-financially sound. Being in a wedding, especially if travel is involved, is expensive. The Best Man for the Job We’d like to advise you to ignore anyone who offers input on choosing your best man, but we know this isn’t entirely realistic. We will say, however, that you’ll want to choose the male who is closest to you and has been there for you. Whether he’s a blood relative or close friend, you’ll be glad when your wedding day arrives that you picked your best friend. Great Expectations When you begin asking your friends to stand up in your wedding, be sure to explain what’s expected. The basics include: Travel and accommodations Attend the rehearsal and dinner Renting tuxedo and shoes Attend tuxedo fittings Help plan and attend the bachelor party Seat guests at the wedding Walk down the aisle with a bridesmaid (maybe) Dance with same bridesmaid Wedding gift (unspoken requirement, of course!) If this is manageable for your buds, you’re in business. Who Doesn’t Make It Keep in mind that a lot of money (whether it’s yours is inconsequential) and effort are being spent on the biggest day of your life. You don’t want to start your lifetime commitment with the following burdens (trust me, I’m a wife): friends who get too drunk, who are late for everything, and who have a reputation for not showing up for important events. These guys are not the best choice for groomsmen. If there’s any doubt about whether your skiing buddy, “GanjaDaddy,” will fulfill his duties, you probably shouldn’t ask him. We suggest, based on horror stories we’ve heard and witnessed, that you choose your most responsible friends for this very special day. This doesn’t mean you load your wedding party with a bunch of stiffs. You know what we’re saying. Keep it reasonable.
